Each of the photographs in this series contains within it a set of burning matches. They are “sets” because one picture shows the matches burning and the second shows them after they have burned. Each set is unique because each match is unique – an odd fact about wooden matches. In the last set, Set 31, one of the matches is reversed stopping the propagation and preserving the last six matches.
Transformation by fire is a process with a predictable outcome but one that can be uncertain and surprising. In Matches this concept is layered visually with details related to personal and cultural transformation. The burning matches are a background reminder of the inevitability of change in many guises.
The show will be accompanied by a Handbook to explain the images.
