Saints and strippers. Bold forms, soft beauty, reflections on childhood and aging. The iconic theme of the body, with its timeless desires and doubts, is explored through contemporary prints by eleven artists.
Visual artists give physical presence to thought and emotion starting with what the five senses give them. Beyond these senses they also intuit feelings expressed metaphorically as “feels” right, “smells” funny, “sounds” interesting, and so on. The challenge of working with the nude is to express the intuited and emotional component of experience with a subject that universally compels the attention of the senses.
Each of us is aware of our own body from within, mingling subject and object. When artists use themselves as models, they work in this arena to engage with their audience. Complexities increase with other models, more so when the subjects are artists themselves. Somewhere in this thicket, our photographers have created images where this intimate awareness migrates directly to the viewer.
